Introduction

It all started in my previous company. One day my boss asked me to make a "Payments to be received" report from the data that was being maintained since ages. And that was the first time I have seen an excel file of size close to 200 MB. Till then I have seen excel files of size maxing to 3 MB; even with all the regression charts and comparisons that we have done in the project of our MBA final semester.

My first thoughts were "Holy Cow!! What are they storing in this excel file. Are they storing the complete database of defaulters along with their family history and pictures to hire some hit-men and send them after the defaulters?"

But the file consisted of only 8 columns - Sl No, Company name, Address, Contact Details, Invoice number, Date, Payment Received, Payment yet to be received. I was aware that the data stored would be huge. But this was my first hands-on experience on such a huge data.

Playing with numbers, I think, followed me through my genes. Thanks to my dad, A Mathematics Professor by profession and a very well respected gentleman among his colleagues, in my native place and among my relations.

Coming back to the point, I have generated a report as guided by my boss. Using basic excel functions, I have removed some duplicates, reformatted the data and gave some colour codes. My boss was very much impressed. Though later he suggested that I have done an excellent work and I still need to improve in my presentation skills.

I feel no shame in admitting that that was the first day I have heard about SAS, when i was googling how to play with huge data. Did I mention that I was the only employee in the company of 800 + employees, who got confirmed, received a salary hike and got promoted at the same time and that too during the peak recession timing of 2008-09. This is one of the proudest moments in my life.

Looking back, sometimes I feel bad for not pursuing my career on Data Analytics from the very beginning. As my mom always say, "Everything happens for a reason. Never ask or even think of things to hurt somebody. Leave rest to God and put up sincere efforts. He will take care of you."

Yesterday night when we were trying to teach Abhigna, my daughter the basic alphabets, We were saying A for Apple. When we were asking her to repeat, out of the blue, she said A for Appa (Appa = Father in Kannada language). My face lit up and I was showcasing my 32 teeth for all. And my wife; she was fuming smokes. Sometimes this women petrifies me. I don't know if I'm so much predictable or if she is a soothsayer. She predicts my next moves and even repeat the sentences that I'm about to say. I get chills sometimes thinking of this.

Now if you have reached till this point, you should be amazing how the thoughts of this guy wanders from one topic to other. Not boring you further, I end this topic here. This is a introduction to me and my family.

See you in further posts.
